Washington Kabul International Construction Company (WKICC) was founded in 2006 and registered with the Afghan Investment Support Agency (AISA) under License D-28417. From its beginning WKICC established itself as a full-service construction and infrastructure firm delivering civilian, humanitarian and government projects across Afghanistan
WKICC grew from a local construction firm into a nationally recognized contractor with extensive experience in building, rehabilitation and infrastructure projects. Under the executive leadership of President Ghulam Nabi Malikzad and the operational direction of Khisrow Malikzad (who served as CEO and, from 2008, as Chairman and principal company leader), WKICC expanded rapidly. At its peak the company employed over 1,500 people — international and national engineers, professional tradespeople, supervisors, team leaders and project managers — and executed more than 100 projects across multiple provinces including Kabul, Kunduz, Takhar, Mazar-e-Sharif, Badakhshan and Baghlan.
WKICC’s service portfolio covered: building and renovation of concrete and metal structures; roads, pavements and drainage; water supply and canalization systems; production of sand, gravel and terrazzo stone; supply of construction materials; transport and logistics; shelter solutions; and technical surveys, maps and design consultancy. The company worked with municipal, national and international clients and donors — including Kabul Municipality, the Ministry of Interior, UN agencies, GIZ, PRTs, and international forces — delivering projects that ranged from community roads and schools to security upgrades and durable shelter solutions.
Quality, safety and sound project management were core to WKICC’s operations. The company maintained a documented Project Management Plan and a proactive “Safety First” program covering worker orientation and training, on-site tool-box talks, safety committees, QC/QA inspections and contingency planning to manage risks on complex projects.
Due to major security and political changes in Afghanistan and the withdrawal of many international actors, WKICC’s leadership relocated abroad. During that period a significant portion of in-country equipment, materials and site assets were lost or left behind. Despite these setbacks, WKICC retains its institutional knowledge, project records, registered credentials and a network of experienced professionals — assets that position the company to rebuild capacity and re-engage with international donors, partners and clients.
Major clients and partners included NATO, ISAF, USAID, German forces, US Army / Coalition Forces, UN agencies (UNAMA, UNHCR, FAO, UN-Habitat), GIZ, PRTs and the Government of Afghanistan. Notable projects span security infrastructure, urban roads and pavements, permanent and transitional shelter programs, school construction, and specialized works such as gabions, silos and plant facilities. Examples include the Taimani Street works, Interior Ministry renovation, UNAMA security upgrades in Kunduz, UNHCR shelter projects, and multiple GIZ roof-protection and building projects.
